Within walking distance of Washington Irving's "Sunnyside," the neighboring mansion of Lyndhurst is widely regarded as the finest surviving example of Gothic Revival architecture in America.
Its first owner, New York Mayor William Paulding, hired architect Alexander Jackson Davis to design the home in 1838. More than two decades later, Davis was brought back to double the size of the home for its second owner, George Merritt, in 1864. The use of the same architect by both owners ensured that the building retained a unity of style during the expansion.
The property acquired the name "Lyndenhurst," eventually shortened to Lyndhurst, in reference to the many Linden trees that grew on the estate. Today, the trees can still be seen on the property, where they've grown huge and full of character.
