Great Cemeteries

Cemeteries are often avoided as sad or creepy places, but they're really so much more - these are solemn, sacred spaces, often filled with history that's worth learning about. They sometimes also feature very good art, in the form of sculpture, stone carving, architecture and landscape design. Cemeteries typically welcome the public, so feel free to visit them respectfully. For a quiet, contemplative place in which to enjoy history and art, I highly recommend the locations featured here. This is by no means an exhaustive list, of course - these are merely the best loctions that I personally have visited and photographed, and this list will surely grow with time.

Lexington Cemetery - Lexington, Kentucky
This historic cemetery has some fine sculpture and also contains a national Civil War cemetery.

Spring Grove Cemetery - Cincinnati, Ohio
This vast cemetery has many ornate mausoleums, and a Civil War section.

Brock Cemetery - Darke County, Ohio
Famous as the burial place of American legend Annie Oakley, this small cemetery features some fine sculpture.

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery - Sleepy Hollow, New York
My personal favorite, this is a wonderland of sculpture, mausoleums, and history.
